Resumen

Presenta este libro la edición crítica y el estudio de la versión neogriega de la colección de fábulas orientales conocida por el nombre de dos de sus protagonistas, Estefanites e Icnelates, y que no es sino la versión griega del Calila y Dimna. La fabulística oriental, que tanta difusión tuvo durante la Edad Media, circuló en la mayoría de las lenguas vernáculas europeas a partir, fundamentalmente, de la recensión bizantina de Simeón Seth (siglo XI), traducción, a su vez, del árabe. El interés e importancia del texto reside en el hecho de que pone a disposición de los estudiosos un testimonio fundamental para profundizar en la historia de la lengua neogriega, como instrumento de expresión literaria de los griegos en el ámbito del mundo otomano. La versión o metáfrasis de esta colección de fábulas, realizada por Teodosio Zigomalas en la Constantinopla de finales del siglo XVI, representa además el esfuerzo más significativo para la fijación del registro coloquial de la lengua frente a la fuerte tradición de utilización del registro arcaizante para la lengua escrita. Además, el riguroso trabajo de la autora de la edición permite al lector adentrarse en el contexto intelectual de los intentos de renovación de la ortodoxia grecohablante en tierras del islam a través de las relaciones de Zigomalas con los humanistas centroeuropeos de la época.

[en] This book presents a critical edition and study of the modern Greek version of the Oriental collection of fables known by the name of two of its protagonists, Estefanita and Icnelates, and is none other than the Greek version of Kalila and Dimna. The Eastern fables, which were so widely circulated during the Middle Ages, came into most European vernacular languages mainly via Simeon Seth's Byzantine recension (11th century), which, in turn, had been translated from Arabic. The interest and importance of the text lies in the fact that it offers students a fundamental testimony with which to delve into the history of the modern-Greek language as an instrument of literary expression of the Greeks in the Ottoman world. The version or metaphrase of this collection of fables, written by Theodosius Zigomalas in Constantinople in the late sixteenth century, also represents the most significant effort to fix the more colloquial register of the language despite the strong tradition of using the archaic register for written language. Moreover, the rigorous work by the author of the edition offers insights into the intellectual backdrop to attempts to renew orthodoxy in the Greek-speaking lands of Islam through relationships between Zigomalas and the Central European humanists of the time.
